INTRODUCTION
Mafia groups and international criminal syndicates serve as tools of statecraft, hybrid warfare, and self-enrichment to those in the Putin regime. The KGB-organized crime nexus in Soviet times and its subsequent evolution is a neglected topic in Western analysis, but it is crucial for understanding the Putin system and its possible futures.
This alliance has expanded and become more deeply intertwined under Putin, according to open-source evidence. For example, the FSB’s role in guarding regime security, controlling society, and fighting corruption has expanded while the FSB itself has become increasingly corrupt and criminalized. Western experts have also noted intensifying Russian secret service use of organized crime networks for intelligence gathering and influence operations in the West, including “strategic corruption” activities.
In this webinar, six experts will examine the Chekist-organized crime nexus, the impact of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and the future – concerning both Putin’s regime and Russian subversive activity abroad. The webinar is open to the public/free of charge.

Il regime putiniano utilizza le organizzazioni mafiose russe e le reti criminali internazionali come strumenti di potere statale, di guerra ibrida e di arricchimento personale. I rapporti stretti tra il KGB e il crimine organizzato durante l’era sovietica – e la successiva evoluzione di questi rapporti nella Russia post-sovietica – è un tema cruciale per comprendere il sistema-Putin e il suo futuro, ma continua ad essere trascurato da esperti e analisti occidentali.
Secondo analisi reperibili su fonti aperte, nell’era Putin la collaborazione tra servizi segreti russi e criminalità organizzata si è sempre più rafforzata. Ad esempio, il ruolo dell’FSB nella tutela della sicurezza del regime, nel controllo della società e nella lotta alla corruzione è stato sempre più potenziato dal Cremlino, ma allo stesso tempo l’FSB stesso è diventato sempre più corrotto e coinvolto in attività affaristiche e criminali.
Inoltre, gli esperti occidentali hanno anche osservato un crescente utilizzo da parte dei servizi segreti russi della criminalità organizzata per attività di spionaggio e ingerenza in Occidente, comprese le operazioni tese a corrompere e cooptare esponenti delle élite politiche occidentali.
In questo webinar, sei esperti esamineranno l’intreccio tra servizi segreti russi e crimine organizzato, l’impatto dell’invasione russa dell’Ucraina nel 2022 sull’alleanza Čekisti-mafie, e le implicazioni di questa alleanza per il futuro del regime di Putin e per le attività sovversive russe all’estero.
